FAREWELL NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT
By Hoshi Printer, Immediate Past-President, Software Council

It is customary for the outgoing President of an organization to trumpet the accomplishments of the past year.

My perspective is a little different. It is more humility than ego that propels me to share our triumphs and thank the people that have participated in our achievements.

First, I want to thank each of our members and sponsors for your continued support that is so vital to the success of the organization. Thank you for helping us achieve our mission of making the region's software and information technology companies more successful.

Behind the scenes, I want to thank the Executive Committee for their hard work this past year, and it has been a pleasure serving with you. I also want to thank our dedicated volunteers and our board members for their valuable participation and active engagement in keeping us on track. And we are all forever grateful to Catrina Gruver, for her indefatigable energy and dedication to the success of this organization.

SOFTWARE COUNCIL MEMBER BECOMES "THE APPRENTICE"

Congratulations are in order for Software Council member, Kelly Perdue. Donald Trump recently hired him after his highly publicized victory last month on the television show "The Apprentice". Kelly was serving as the president of CoreObjects, member company of the Software Council, when he was selected out of 1 million applicants to participate on "The Apprentice".

Kelly provided leadership in business development, legal, finance and operations for CoreObjects, a leading Los Angeles based outsourced product development company, which has been building core intellectual property in collaboration with Southern California software companies for eight years (www.coreobjects.com).

VALUING PR: WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?
By Rose Maciejewski, vice president, Ruder Finn, and Casy Jones, vice president, Ruder Finn

Public relations holds enormous value as a strategic vehicle to influence the media and analysts and, ultimately, your customers, prospects and shareholders. Most marketing and communications executives understand this, but, surprisingly, they sometimes find it difficult to properly share that value with their companies' top executives. Ensuring C-level executives understand how to leverage the value PR brings should be a key concern for every communications professional.

The first step in leveraging PR is learning exactly what it entails. For most technology organizations, a comprehensive PR program will include ongoing "key message" refinement, media relations, industry analyst relations, customer advocacy and thought leadership, which involves speaking opportunities, awards and developing bylined articles.

Though some of these tactics are more relevant than others depending on the company, the incremental value of them can be measured in three distinct ways, each of which appear at the top of your agenda: enhanced sales effectiveness, credible industry awareness and creation of employee evangelists.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: INTERVIEW WITH FIRAS RAOUF,
COO, eEYE DIGITAL SECURITY

Interview by Jennifer Beever

Firas, would you explain exactly what your company does?

eEye Digital Security specializes in an area within the security market called vulnerability management. One of the major issues enterprises are faced with is the inherent vulnerabilities that are found in computing devices, whether it's the operating system or the software that runs on it. These vulnerabilities are discovered by hackers that use them to launch attacks or by ethical research firms that report them to the vendor, and then the vendor comes out with a patch.

eEye's primary business is delivering software solutions to help manage vulnerabilities within the enterprise network. Our primary offering is a software product that scans your network, uncovers all the digital devices that you have, whether you know about them or not (they could be rogue devices), and runs a series of checks on the devices of known vulnerabilities. We then provide reports of all devices, all vulnerabilities, and priorities based on criticality of the vulnerability and the device that it sits on.

HEALTH CARE BENEFIT TRENDS - INCREASED OPTIONS MAKE COVERAGE MORE AFFORDABLE
By Jim Wisdom, CFP

2004 has been one of the most innovative years in health care benefits in the last thirty years. This is good news for employers and sole proprietors/individuals alike. The innovation is accelerating as we approach 2005. Here is a list of some of the most important health care trends today:

1. With a new generation of health plans introduced into the marketplace, business owners and individuals have the ability to purchase comparable health insurance plans which are 25% to 30% less costly than traditional "old generation" HMO and/or PPO plans for the same or better quality, benefits and provider networks. Further, this savings should have a compounding effect in subsequent years. In short, these new generation health plans appear to be a more efficient way to deliver health care to individuals and employer groups.
