Selection Committee

The Technology Industry Award judges review all applications submitted, select the three finalist per award category, interview each finalist and select the award recipient for each category.

Judges Bios:

Uri Blackman, Founder & CEO - Gideon Informatics

Uri Blackman is founder and CEO of GIDEON Informatics an online medical publishing company he founded with Dr. Berger while in undergrad. The flagship product, GIDEON, is installed in hundreds of institutions in over 45 countries.

Uri served as Vice President of Corporate Development at Speedbit. In this role, Uri developed and managed strategic relationships for Download Accelerator, a software product whose user base grew from 13 to over 90 million users during his time with the company. Uri also managed a successful M&A process for the company. Uri came to Speedbit after founding Oloop, a venture backed online insurance brokerage firm. Prior to Oloop, Uri managed the computing and download channels on Netscape's website and was a product manager for two generations of the Netscape browser. Following the AOL-Netscape merger, he worked in Business Development at AOL.

Uri has served on the advisory board of a number of technology companies in the Silicon Valley. Uri served as Commander in the Israel Defense Forces Intelligence Corp. He received his BA in Computer Science and Philosophy from Tel Aviv University and his Masters of Business Administration from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Charles Curto, Managing Partner - Tech Coast Equity Group

Charles Curto is founder and Managing Principal of Tech Coast Equity Group. TCEG is an investment banking boutique which focuses on acquisitions, strategic alliances, financing and exit strategies for middle market and high potential early stage businesses.

A seasoned mergers and acquisitions professional who has structured and executed a variety of transactions in the U.S. and overseas, Charles has also held senior positions with three other Southern California M&A advisories. Prior to that, he spent more than twenty years in acquisitions and corporate finance, including serving as Director of Planning and Development for The Santa Cruz Operation, Manager of Business Development for Rockwell International, and Assistant Treasurer - International Finance for TRW.

Charles received his B.S. in Mathematics from Boston College and his M.B.A. in Finance from Columbia University. He completed the Mergers and Acquisitions Program at Northwestern University as well as the Strategic Marketing and Manufacturing Strategy programs offered by Harvard Business School. Charles is a Certified Business Intermediary and holds a California real estate license.

Bryan Gadol, Partner - Dorsey & Whitney LLP

Bryan S. Gadol is a partner in Dorsey’s Corporate group. Mr. Gadol has extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, public and private securities offerings, private equity and venture capital transactions, SEC reporting and corporate governance.

Mr. Gadol also provides general corporate advice to emerging growth and middle market companies and investors operating or investing in a wide variety of industries through all stages of the business and investment lifecycle.

David Hayes, Partner - Dorsey & Whitney LLP

Partner in the Corporate group and co-chair of the Licensing and Technology Commerce practice. Mr. Hayes has extensive experience in advising clients in connection with intellectual property protection strategies and all aspects of high technology transactions including the acquisition and protection of intellectual property, research and development transactions, acquisition of high technology companies, financing of high technology companies as well as on the buying, selling, leasing, distribution, licensing and development of high technology products and services.

Ben Kuo, Founder, Editor and Publisher -

Benjamin F. Kuo is the founder of SOCALTECH LLC, the publisher of, a widely read newsletter and web site focused on Southern California's high tech industry. tracks venture capital funding, high tech news, events, and runs frequent interviews with local entrepreneurs. The site also features a subscription venture database with lists of local high tech companies, venture capital firms, executive bios, and more.

Mandana Massoumi, Partner - Dorsey & Whitney LLP

Mandana Massoumi practices exclusively in the area of employment law. She represents employers at trial and arbitration on complex employment litigation, wage and hour class actions, multi-plaintiff and single plaintiff cases involving various employment claims, including discrimination and harassment, wrongful discharge, unfair competition, and misappropriation of trade secrets.

Mandana regularly advises a wide range of corporations—public and private, large and small—on labor and employment-related issues, including wage and hour matters under state law and the FLSA, unfair competition, reasonable accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA"), the Family Medical Leave Act ("FMLA") and the Fair Employment and Housing Act ("FEHA"), protecting proprietary information, non-solicitation issues, and other related personnel matters. Mandana also designs and conducts wage and hour audits, investigations and training on every aspect of the employment relationship. She has given numerous presentations on a wide array of employment and management training and seminars.

Kurt Miklinski, Silicon Valley Bank

Kurt has focused his career on facilitating the success of entrepreneurs.  He is currently a Vice President within the Structured Products group of Silicon Valley Bank.  As a member of the Southern California team for seven years, Kurt has worked with technology and life science companies in all stages of the business cycle.  Prior to joining Silicon Valley Bank, he was a member of PNC Bank’s venture lending group. 

Kurt is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University and is actively involved with the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education.  He is also Founder of The Advancement Academy (, a non-profit organization whose flagship event is a one-week camp that exposes high school students to concepts of financial literacy, leadership and corporate citizenship. 

Ed Sauve, Silicon Valley Bank

Ed Sauve is the Senior Advisor for the Global Financial Services Group of Silicon Valley Bank and he has over 25 years of commercial banking experience including provision of credit and delivery of a wide variety of financial services to small business, middle market, institutional and multi-national companies. International banking experience included assignments in London, Middle East, & Hong Kong. He opened Middle East Area Representative office for First Interstate Bank in the United Arab Emirates and led program to obtain license to open its bank office in Beijing, China.

Domestically he managed regional corporate centers in Los Angeles and the South Bay for Wells Fargo/First Interstate as well as regional responsibility for marketing Silicon Valley Bank’s short-term money market capabilities in Southern California. Transaction experience in commercial lending, cash management, corporate finance, short-term money market investments, and international banking.

Parker Schweich, Partner - Dorsey & Whitney LLP

Mr. Schweich is a Partner in the Corporate practice group and has extensive experience representing companies, investment banks and venture capital firms in corporate finance transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings and other registered public offerings, PIPE transactions and other private placements of equity and debt, and venture capital financings. His practice also includes advising companies in a variety of industries on corporate and securities law, SEC reporting and regulatory matters, Sarbanes-Oxley Act, Nasdaq and NYSE compliance matters, executive compensation matters, and corporate governance and other general corporate matters.

Jamie Somes, Managing Director - Alexander Dunham Capital Group

Mr. Somes is the head and co-founder of Alexander Dunham Capital. Alexander Dunham Capital is a merchant bank focused on M&A and private equity/debt for emerging growth companies with industry expertise and focus on information technology, software, defense, digital media and gaming. His industry experience includes founding 6 companies in the software and digital media areas. Operational experience includes the restructuring of Liquid Audio (LQID: NASD.NMS) (the first legal digital music and rights management company) as Chairman and Special Committee Chairman.

He has more than 25 years experience in investment banking, principal investing and leveraged finance and has originated, structured and placed private equity, leveraged acquisition, mezzanine, project finance and international merchant banking transactions amounting to over $5.8 billion.   Previously, Mr. Somes was at Security Pacific Business Credit where he was the West Coast manager for the company’s $80 million mezzanine debt fund.  Prior to that, he was Vice President of Citicorp Leveraged Capital and with Citicorp International Limited/Asia Pacific Capital Corp., Citicorp’s Hong Kong-based Asia/Pacific Merchant Bank.  Mr. Somes received his Bachelor of Arts in History from Tufts University and his MBA/MSUP from Columbia University.

Andrew Warner, Founder - Mixergy

Andrew Warner is an ambitious internet entrepreneur. In 1998 he used credit card debt to launch Bradford & Reed, an online greeting card company which reached annual revenues of over $38 million. After selling the company in 2003, he launched, where ambitious startups learn from a mix of experienced entrepreneurs.
